Fayetteville

The City of Fayetteville serves as the county seat and is home to a number of historic residences and landmarks. The Old Courthouse, located in the square downtown, was built in 1825 and is the oldest in Georgia. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has the "world's longest courthouse bench" displayed alongside its southern walkway. A variety of small shops, businesses and restaurants ring the courthouse square today. Other popular historic sites are the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House Museum, the Historic Train Depot, the Hollingsworth House, and the Fayette County Historical Society, housed in the former Margaret Mitchell Library. North of downtown Fayetteville, the Fayette Pavillion is one of Georgia's largest outdoor shopping malls, drawing visitors from across the South Metro region. Smaller specialty shops and restaurants can be found throughout the area. For a listing, see the Chamber Business Directory.

Peachtree City

In addition to Fayetteville, incorporated cities in Fayette include Brooks, Peachtree City, Tyrone and Woolsey. The largest city in the county, Peachtree City, is a planned community with over 90 miles of pedestrian and golf-cart paths traversing the city and connecting neighborhoods with shopping, schools, churches and recreation areas. Incorporated in 1959, Peachtree City features a wealth of amenities including three championship caliber golf courses, two lakes, a state-of-the-art tennis center, the 2,200- seat Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater, a full sized BMX course, and an indoor pool and recreation complex at the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center. It is also home to Falcon Field Airport, a technologically advanced public airport for light aircraft. It also is the site of "The Great Georgia Airshow" each fall.

Tyrone

The city of Tyrone is built on land originally belonging to the Creek Indians and settled by Irish farmers in the late 1800's, and is one the fastest growing cities in Fayette County. One of its most popular events for visitors is its annual Tyrone Founders' Day celebration. Activities typically include a 5K Road Race and Fun Run, a parade and art show, plus entertainment and fireworks.

Brooks & Woosley

Two smaller cities in Fayette County are Brooks and Woolsey. Both offer residential areas with large lots and open spaces, giving residents an option for a more rural lifestyle. Each spring, residents and visitors alike enjoy the Brooks' Day festival.

Fayette County History

Steeped in history, Fayette County was named for Marquis de LaFayette, a French nobleman who was one of General George Washington's commanders in the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War, cavalry skirmishes took place in the middle of the county as an indirect part of The Battle of Atlanta. Then, in the 1930's, Margaret Mitchell spent time in Fayette County, researching facts for "Gone With the Wind". Members of her great grandfather's family, who are now buried in the Fayetteville City Cemetery, were the inspiration for the O'Hara family in the book.

Altogether, Fayette County has roughly 199 square miles of area and approximately 100,000 people. We hope you'll enjoy your visit to Fayette County, and come back often!
